Fuchu Kyokusui-no-en Festival

The grace of the Heian Period (798-1192) reproduced today
In the Heian Period, Kyokusui-no-en (poem writing ceremony) was held in the garden of the Kakugan-ji Temple. In Kyokusui-no-en, lacquered sake cups are set afloat down the stream. Before the cups reach each of the participants (aristocrats and artists in those days) sitting along the stream, they have to compose a Japanese poem (Waka) and write it down on a strip of paper and read it out loud. When the cups reach them, they pick one up and cover it with the paper strip, and then set it back on the stream.
Fuchu Kyokusui-no-en is a reproduction of this aristocratic grace in accordance with the ancient rituals. In this festival, a parade of the Toyama Domain's lord and the classic cultural events are also held.
